Curl Offers End-to-End Solution for Enterprise Rich Internet Applications with Addition of Curl Data Kit Data Services

New component leverages Adobe AMF protocol, allowing enterprise Curl applets and Flex applets to share the same servers

Cambridge, Mass. — January 6, 2009 — Curl®, Inc. today announced the release of Curl Data Kit Data Services (CDK-DS). The Curl CDK-DS is ideal for enterprise developers who are building new applications that require a fast, scalable and reliable data connection to existing server infrastructure. This includes those developers using Adobe Flex or Flash who have discovered that they need a more robust client side technology, as well as developers who are upgrading an existing Curl application and require a more powerful and scalable data connectivity solution.

This addition to the Curl Rich Internet Application (RIA) Platform is an implementation of the Adobe Action Message Format (AMF) protocol, a binary protocol for communicating and exchanging data between a RIA client and server platforms. Quickly becoming the binary application network protocol of choice for the enterprise, AMF is supported by the open source BlazeDS platform, Adobe LiveCycle Data Services, and soon the Zend PHP platform.

"Enterprise-class RIAs are consumers of large amounts of data services," said Jnan Dash, chief strategy officer, Curl, Inc. "Since data transfer time typically is a significant bottleneck with these data-centric rich client applications, the availability of a compact data transfer format such as AMF is an important enabler for them. We are excited to extend these capabilities to the Curl community and offer Adobe Flex and Flash developers an alternative solution to their enterprise RIA challenges."

"Although AMF was originally developed by Adobe for Flex and Flash developers, it is well suited for use with other RIA technologies including Curl," said Bert Halstead, chief architect, Curl. Inc. "We recognized the elegance of AMF as a fast binary protocol and adopted it for use with the Curl RIA Platform."

This initial release of the CDK-DS implements all of the remoting and web messaging services that are supported by the open source BlazeDS server, including publish/subscribe, server push, remote procedure calls (RPC), and security and authorization features. Additionally, all communication with the server is asynchronous, an important option for usability, as it keeps the user interface active even while waiting for a response from the server.

The CDK-DS library is the latest product from Curl's open source strategy and continues Curl's initiative to provide libraries that facilitate building data-centric applications. This initiative began in July 2008 with the release of the CDK library, which provides support for local SQL databases. By allowing the storage and retrieval of data using the popular SQLite engine, the CDK library is an important foundation for occasionally connected computing (OCC) applications developed with Curl.

About Curl, Inc.

Curl provides a Rich Internet Application platform for building and deploying Web-based applications that demand complex, highly interactive interfaces previously only possible as client-server applications. Using Curl, developers can implement a new class of complex, business-critical, Web-based applications that cannot easily be developed with Ajax or other smart client technologies. Curl allows corporations with legacy client-server applications to move to Web-based delivery, increasing reach and reducing cost. Founded in 1998, Curl is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumisho Computer Systems. Curl has over 300 customers and 40 partners world-wide.
